Teach children to farm, and you feed a whole community

School garden in Walanga Primary School

Hunger impedes concentration, health and motivation. If we want to ensure a conductive learning environment for our children, we must ensure they are well-fed. It is for this reason that Nsette Foundation Uganda has partnered with The Pollination Project (TPP), a foundation which funds grassroot changemakers in order to create a more sustainable, peaceful and compassionate world.

We designed a hands-on nutritional garden at Walanga Primary school, where more than 70 students can grow their own vegetables. Not only will this generate healthy, home-grown food for Walanga Primary School to offer in their school meals, it also teaches valuable skills which the students can bring home. The experience gained in food growing, water-wise farming and environmental care can in turn be taught to their own families, thus teaching a whole community. Additionally, take-home seeds will be provided to at least 40 families, to aid them in starting their own home gardens.

The project is managed by Mukose Daniel, who volunteers at a reduced stipend and teaches in Lusoga. The land was allocated by head teacher Edmond Mulondo, while the School Management Committee and Parent-Teacher Associated contributed voluntary labor for fencing and clearing. Finally, the Bugweri District Agricultural Extension Office will offer technical advice during two visits.

Thanks to TPPs support, over 70 students are building a school nutrition garden, learning about the challenges, difficulties, do’s-and-don’ts of farming. Through this project, they are laying the seeds for their own future, and that of their community.
